Omnindex Journal 13/feb - Web design is my passion
This is a journal I write while I build Omnindex, a search app, and post here, without much editing, just writing what comes to mind
Today I felt like playing a bit more with design, I should take it because it's not everyday that I'm inspired, even though I've been wanting to do it for a while. I've got so much absorbed with the backend of Omnindex, that I kept postponing the design, I guess I really wanted it to have a solid proof-of-concept first, so any work later wouldn't be in vain.
Anyway, my younger self played a fair amount of time with fireworks doing some ~2007 website design, until Adobe kill it for Photoshop (damn it Macromedia! I knew you should never have sold to Adobe, Flash could be king today!), but nowadays I'm usually too lazy to open a design app like that, and just play with CSS directly. But this time I decided not to, I've remembered Bret Victor's talk on Inventing on Principle, which I watched not too long ago, on how fast iteration is important for creativity to flow. So I fired up Photopea, which is basically a free, online photoshop.
Now those product home pages are all the same nowadays, curiously, the ones I find the hardest to think about the design, because you need to get it done really well, to sell the idea right. Anyway I decided not to think about it too hard, and just look at a bunch of product pages on google images and product hunt to get inspiration, and I basically followed one of the standard patterns of logo on the top-left, big title with small explanation and CTA on the left side, and a drawing of the product on the right, at the end I think it looked really cool, check it out:
Don’t you feel like signing up already? I do! Well, the logo at the top is clearly too big, not the exact right font and line-height (couldn't change that on Photopea), but I can fix those things with CSS, anyway, I really like how this is going so far! Definitively got me a good and quick start!
